The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening community engagement and promoting sustainable agricultural development during the Provincial Legislature’s Pre-Taking Legislature to the People (Pre-TLP) Public Hearing. The event was held over two days at the Adelaide Tambo Community Hall in Mhluzi Extension 7, located within the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The programme created an important platform for government departments, local stakeholders and residents to engage directly on matters affecting communities. It also highlighted the importance of taking government services closer to the people while providing an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns and receive feedback. DARDLEA’s participation reflected its ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, encourage agricultural growth and strengthen relationships with farming communities across the province.

As part of the programme, Members of the Provincial Legislature visited several agricultural and environmental projects that demonstrate the department’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. These included an Air Quality Monitoring Station, a vegetable tunnel and the Smart Agriculture Box project situated at Steve Tshwete Boarding School. The visits allowed legislators to witness first-hand how these initiatives contribute to environmental monitoring, food production and agricultural education. The vegetable tunnel showcased practical methods of improving crop production throughout the year while protecting plants from harsh weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Smart Agriculture Box project highlighted the use of modern technology to promote efficient farming practices and inspire young learners to consider careers in agriculture.

The Air Quality Monitoring Station formed another important part of the visit by demonstrating the department’s efforts to safeguard environmental health while supporting sustainable development. Air quality monitoring provides valuable information that assists government in identifying pollution levels and developing strategies to protect communities and natural resources. Legislators had the opportunity to observe how environmental monitoring systems operate and how collected data contributes to informed decision-making. Integrating environmental management with agricultural development remains essential in ensuring long-term food security and sustainable rural livelihoods. Through projects such as these, DARDLEA continues to promote responsible resource management while balancing economic growth with environmental protection.

The DARDLEA Exhibition Team also played a central role throughout the event by presenting information on the department’s various programmes and services. The exhibition allowed community members to interact directly with departmental officials, ask questions and receive guidance on agricultural support initiatives available to farmers and residents. Informational displays covered a wide range of topics, including crop production, livestock development, environmental conservation and rural development opportunities. Officials engaged with visitors by explaining how different programmes are designed to improve food security, increase agricultural productivity and create economic opportunities within local communities. This direct engagement helped strengthen transparency while ensuring that residents gained a better understanding of the department’s work.

One of the highlights of the exhibition was the active participation of local farmers, who displayed and sold a variety of fresh agricultural produce directly to community members. Their presence demonstrated the value of supporting local food producers while encouraging residents to purchase fresh, locally grown products. The exhibition created a valuable marketplace where farmers could generate income, promote their businesses and build relationships with consumers. Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about locally produced fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products while supporting small-scale farming enterprises. Such initiatives contribute to strengthening local economies and promoting agricultural entrepreneurship within rural communities.

Community participation remained one of the most significant aspects of the two-day programme. Residents actively engaged with DARDLEA officials and Members of the Legislature by asking questions about government services, agricultural support programmes and local development initiatives. These discussions provided valuable insight into the challenges facing communities while allowing government representatives to explain ongoing projects and future plans. Open dialogue between government and citizens helps improve accountability and ensures that public concerns are acknowledged and addressed. The willingness of community members to participate reflected growing public interest in agricultural development and improved service delivery.

The broader objective of the Pre-Taking Legislature to the People programme was to bring the Provincial Legislature closer to communities across the province. Rather than expecting residents to travel to government offices, the initiative enables legislators and government departments to engage directly with citizens in their own communities. This approach allows public representatives to assess service delivery at local level while identifying areas that require improvement. Face-to-face interactions also strengthen trust between government institutions and the public by encouraging transparency and accountability. Events such as these create opportunities for meaningful collaboration between government, communities and development partners.

DARDLEA’s participation in the Provincial Legislature’s Pre-TLP Public Hearing demonstrated the department’s ongoing commitment to agricultural development, environmental sustainability and community empowerment. By showcasing innovative farming projects, engaging directly with residents and supporting local farmers through exhibitions, the department reinforced the importance of inclusive service delivery. The event successfully brought together legislators, government officials, farmers and community members to discuss shared priorities and explore practical solutions for local development. Continued collaboration through programmes like the Pre-Taking Legislature to the People initiative will remain essential in strengthening rural communities, promoting sustainable agriculture and ensuring that government services respond effectively to the needs of the people.
