Day 2 of the 4th Annual Northern Cape Provincial Extension Conference and MEC’s Extension Awards has officially started in the Frances Baard District Municipality, Northern Cape, South Africa. The gathering brings together agricultural extension officers from across the province to focus on improving how agricultural support services are delivered. This year’s theme, “Towards Redesigning the Agricultural Extension Service in South Africa,” sets a clear direction for reform and modernization. The conference aims to strengthen the role of extension practitioners in supporting farmers, especially smallholder and emerging producers. It also places strong attention on practical solutions that can improve food production and rural livelihoods in the province.
This morning’s briefing session was attended by MEC Lebogang Motlhaping, a politician responsible for agricultural leadership in the province, alongside Head of Department Mr Monakali. The session unpacked the full programme for the day and set expectations for participants. Discussions focused on how agricultural extension services can become more responsive, more innovative, and better aligned with current farming challenges. The leadership emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between government, extension officers, researchers, and farming communities. The tone of the briefing reflected urgency, with a strong push toward improving service delivery outcomes in the agricultural sector.
The programme for the day includes a wide range of technical and development-focused sessions designed to build capacity and share knowledge. Key topics include redesigning agricultural extension services in South Africa and the role of learning networks in improving service delivery. Participants will also engage on market-driven agricultural production and how farmers can better access and respond to market demands. Other discussions will explore the use of social media by smallholder producers and extension practitioners as a tool for communication and growth. Additional sessions will focus on agricultural academic programmes, climate-smart agricultural practices, disaster risk reduction and management, Foot and Mouth Disease challenges in the Northern Cape, and the impact of climatic factors on livestock production. These sessions aim to equip extension officers with practical tools that can be applied directly in the field.
The day will conclude with the MEC’s Extension Awards Gala Evening, a key highlight of the conference. During the event, MEC Lebogang Motlhaping will deliver the keynote address and recognize outstanding performance within the extension services sector. The awards will honour individuals and teams who have shown excellence, commitment, and innovation in supporting agricultural development. The recognition is expected to motivate extension officers to continue improving service delivery across the province. The conference reinforces the importance of modern, informed, and responsive agricultural extension systems that can support long term food security and rural development in the Northern Cape.
