By fostering an environment of learning and collaboration, the Department reinforced its commitment to supporting local agricultural development and boosting small-scale farming enterprises.

Representatives from various organisations delivered informative sessions throughout the day. FNB presented on agricultural insurance, explaining the types of coverage available and how farmers can apply for protection against unforeseen losses. Mr Buthelezi from DARD shared details on training programs, mentorship opportunities, and graduate initiatives designed to equip farmers with practical skills and guidance. Mrs Seerane from the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) focused on pig health and nutrition, emphasizing the importance of proper lactation feed to prevent mycotoxins and improve overall herd performance. These presentations offered farmers actionable insights to enhance productivity, reduce risks, and implement efficient farm management practices.

Mrs Thandeka, Chairperson of the Botshabelo study group, encouraged farmers to join study groups and attend regular information sessions. She highlighted that collective learning allows farmers to share experiences, solve common challenges, and stay updated on industry developments. Mrs Lillan from DARD also discussed government support programmes and funding opportunities, motivating farmers to apply for grants and financial assistance to expand and formalise their businesses. This guidance emphasized that support is available at both the organisational and governmental levels, ensuring farmers have access to the resources needed to succeed.

The event also served as a platform to motivate and inspire farmers to professionalise their operations. Attendees were reminded that consistent learning, adopting modern practices, and engaging with mentorship networks can significantly improve productivity and profitability. The Department stressed that pig farming is not only a source of income but also an opportunity for economic development and job creation within local communities. By equipping farmers with knowledge, resources, and support networks, the Department aims to strengthen the province’s agricultural sector and enhance food security.

Overall, the Piggery Information Day at Thaba Nchu provided farmers with practical guidance, motivation, and access to valuable resources. Participants left with a clearer understanding of best practices, financial support, and health management for pigs, enabling them to improve their farming operations. The event demonstrated the Department’s commitment to empowering small-scale farmers, encouraging collaboration, and fostering sustainable agricultural growth. By building knowledge, networks, and skills, local pig farmers are better positioned to formalise their businesses, increase productivity, and contribute meaningfully to the regional agricultural economy.
