The KwaZulu Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development delivered production inputs to farmers in uMbumbulu. The MEC, Ms Thembeni kaMadlopha Mthethwa, led the team that visited the Makhanya Tribal Authority to hand over the support. The visit formed part of the department’s programme that assists farmers who applied through its project funding system.

uMbumbulu sits within eThekwini Municipality and is one of its main farming zones. The area has fertile land that supports vegetables, dry and green beans, maize, sugarcane and amadumbe. Many small scale farmers in the region rely on inputs to secure stable yields and expand production.

The department distributed fertilisers, manure and seeds. It also provided mechanisation support. The inputs help farmers improve soil health, increase planting efficiency and grow a wider range of crops. Mechanisation reduces labour pressure and shortens planting cycles. Better soil nutrition increases yield potential for vegetable crops and staples grown in the area.

Two hundred and nineteen farmers from eThekwini Municipality benefited from the programme. One hundred and twenty five of these farmers are from uMbumbulu. These figures show that the area has a high concentration of producers who depend on government support to strengthen production.

KaMadlopha Mthethwa said the department will continue rolling out the programme. She said the aim is to give farmers the tools they need to increase output and build more secure livelihoods. She noted that the support is designed to improve food production in rural communities.

The inputs are expected to boost crop performance in uMbumbulu. Fertile land and consistent access to seeds and fertiliser give farmers the chance to scale up production. Increased output supports local markets in eThekwini and creates income opportunities for rural households.

Farmers in the area expect improved yields for amadumbe, beans and vegetables in the coming seasons. The department’s continued support places uMbumbulu in a strong position to strengthen its role as a key farming hub in KwaZulu Natal.
