The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, led by Hon. MEC Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has launched a major initiative to revive agricultural activity in the Zululand District. On 5 December 2025, at Ezibomvu Sportsfield in Mondlo under the Abaqulusi Local Municipality, the Department officially handed over a suite of Integrated Farmer Support Services. This intervention addresses the decline in the region’s agricultural productivity and aims to strengthen rural livelihoods.

The programme delivers tools, training, and resources to farmers, with a focus on those in rural and historically under-serviced areas. By providing timely support and guidance, the Department seeks to improve service delivery, enhance production, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative represents a significant step toward empowering local farmers and supporting long-term development in the province.

In her keynote address, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised that restoring Zululand’s agricultural capacity is central to KwaZulu-Natal’s broader rural development goals. She highlighted that targeted resources, effective support, and strong partnerships between the Department, local municipalities, and farming communities are critical to building resilience and fostering growth in the sector.

This intervention underscores the Department’s commitment to ensuring that farmers have access to the practical tools and knowledge necessary to improve production. By strengthening agriculture in Zululand, the programme aims to create sustainable livelihoods, increase food security, and stimulate economic activity in rural communities.

The handover of Integrated Farmer Support Services marks a proactive approach to rural development, demonstrating the province’s dedication to empowering farmers and revitalising the agricultural sector. Through continued collaboration and strategic support, KwaZulu-Natal is working to transform rural agriculture and build a more resilient and productive farming community.
