GDARD is supporting a five day aquaculture training programme at Gariep Dam in the Free State. The programme runs from 24 to 28 November. It brings together 25 participants. Twelve farmers come from the three Gauteng regions. Thirteen community members come from Hammanskraal and Magaliesburg. Both areas form part of UNESCO linked Biosphere communities. The programme is sponsored by the Directorate of Multilateral Programmes under the DFFE.
Participants receive focused training on freshwater fish farming. The programme blends classroom learning and practical demonstrations. You learn fish nutrition. You learn how to manage water quality. You learn how to apply biosecurity. You learn how to run a hatchery. You learn how to identify and respond to fish diseases. You learn breeding methods that support consistent production. Each session aims to give you usable skills that you can apply on your farm or in your community projects.
The training matters because it strengthens your technical capacity. Better skills lead to better yields. Better yields support household food security. The programme also builds the foundation for sustainable aquaculture in Gauteng. You gain knowledge that helps you protect water resources and avoid production losses. You become able to run cleaner and more efficient systems. This improves your long term profitability. It also positions your community to create new livelihood opportunities.
The training helps to grow Gauteng’s aquaculture sector. Freshwater fish farming offers stable demand and growth potential. When you apply strong management practices, you reduce risks linked to water quality and disease. You also improve product quality. This gives farmers in the province a stronger path to reliable income. Communities in Hammanskraal and Magaliesburg gain new technical knowledge that supports local development. Farmers from across the three regions bring home skills that lift production standards.
GDARD sees this programme as an investment in people. It builds confidence and capability. It prepares participants to share what they have learned with others. This helps to strengthen value chains and support community projects. Each participant becomes a driver of growth in a sector that offers real economic value for the province.
The programme sets up farmers and community members for practical success. It gives them clear methods to improve production. It supports sustainable food systems. It builds stronger livelihoods across Gauteng.
