The Free State MEC recently met with the South African Pork Producers Organisation (SAPPO) in Pretoria to strengthen support for piggery projects in the province. The meeting aimed to tackle key challenges facing emerging and small-scale producers and improve overall productivity and sustainability.
Rising feed costs, bio-security risks, and limited market access were identified as major obstacles for pig farmers. Both the MEC and SAPPO stressed the importance of coordinated interventions to help smallholders overcome these barriers and maintain competitive operations.
To address these challenges, several initiatives were agreed upon. Extension Officers from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) will receive training in technical and management aspects of pig production. Selected officers will also gain practical experience at SAPPO facilities, providing hands-on exposure to modern piggery practices. A structured plan will be developed to improve the Department’s piggery projects, ensuring they are efficient, market-ready, and sustainable.
The MEC and SAPPO will review progress in March 2026, assessing the impact of these measures and planning further support where needed.
For small-scale pig farmers, this partnership highlights opportunities to access expert guidance, training, and support networks. By aligning production with market needs, farmers can improve herd quality, increase profitability, and reduce risks associated with feed costs and disease. These coordinated efforts demonstrate a clear pathway for building stronger, more resilient piggery operations in the Free State.
