The Preservation and Development of Agricultural Land Act, Act 39 of 2024, Regulation Workshop ended yesterday. The conclusion marked a key point in the effort to improve how South Africa protects and manages its agricultural land. The workshop aimed to improve coordination in the sector and to prepare institutions for the full rollout of the Act.

The sessions brought national and provincial departments together with experts, stakeholders and sector partners. You saw open discussions on the purpose of the Act, the scope of the regulations and the duties expected from every institution. The sessions helped participants build a shared understanding of the policy direction and the steps needed to support long term land productivity.

Officials reviewed the structure of the Act and spoke about how the new rules guide land use decisions. Many participants focused on the need for clear processes that support food security, soil conservation and responsible development. You also saw strong interest in tools that can help government monitor land trends and respond to risks early.

Roles and responsibilities formed a major part of the agenda. Departments wanted clarity on how to coordinate authorisations and how to streamline communication. The discussions highlighted the importance of timely reporting, joint planning and consistent application of the regulations across the country.

The workshop also covered practical approaches for implementation. Participants shared examples of land management challenges in rural districts and high pressure zones. These examples helped identify methods that can strengthen compliance, improve decision making and support farmers. Many participants stressed the value of training and technical support for officials who will oversee the new system.

The conclusion of the workshop signals readiness to move into the next phase of implementation. Government partners now hold a common view of how the Act should function in practice. The outcomes give national and provincial teams a clearer roadmap for protecting agricultural land and supporting sustainable growth.
