The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture (DoA) has provided essential water infrastructure and production support to farmers in Nqanqarhu (Maclear), addressing critical irrigation challenges in the region. The initiatives target vegetable-producing communities who have struggled with access to reliable water sources.
The official handover included spring water projects, production inputs, and gardening tools under the Ilima/Letsema Lokulima Programme, which promotes the productive use of arable land. Farmers expressed gratitude, highlighting the impact of these resources on their ability to sustain and expand vegetable production.
During a visit to Lower Tsitsana village, MEC Nomakhosazana Kontsiwe also delivered 32 industrial sewing machines, including overlockers and straight machines, to 16 women-led enterprises from three Joe Gqabi local municipalities. This initiative aims to boost local economic development and empower women entrepreneurs through access to modern equipment.
The dual support for agriculture and small enterprises underscores the department’s commitment to strengthening livelihoods, improving food security, and fostering inclusive economic growth across rural communities. Farmers and entrepreneurs alike welcomed the interventions, noting their potential to transform local production and business activities.
The Ilima/Letsema Lokulima Programme continues to play a key role in ensuring communities have the tools and resources necessary to maximize land use, while supporting sustainable development in the Eastern Cape.
