The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) recently hosted delegations from Zambia and Eswatini for a series of hands-on tours to South Africa’s leading agricultural innovation sites. The visits highlighted sustainable farming techniques, technology adoption, and strategies for enhancing productivity.

The first stop was a Regenerative Farm in Bela Bela, where delegates observed soil restoration methods, crop rotation practices, and natural pest management strategies. Farmers at the site demonstrated how these approaches improve soil health, increase yields, and reduce reliance on chemical inputs.

At the Woodland Estate, visitors explored water management systems, wetland conservation projects, and land rehabilitation structures. The estate showcased practical methods to retain water, prevent soil erosion, and restore degraded land, offering insights that can be applied across different farming contexts.

The ARC-VIMP Hydroponics facility provided delegates with exposure to soilless farming techniques. They learned how nutrient-rich water solutions and controlled environments can support year-round vegetable production while conserving water and reducing crop losses. The facility also demonstrated automation tools that monitor plant growth, optimize resources, and improve efficiency.

Delegates engaged in discussions with ARC experts, exchanging knowledge on sustainable practices and exploring opportunities for regional collaboration. “Seeing these innovations firsthand gives us ideas we can adapt in our countries to improve productivity and sustainability,” said one delegate.

The tour reinforced ARC’s mission to advance agricultural research and innovation while promoting regional cooperation. By sharing expertise and practical solutions, the initiative helps farmers adopt sustainable methods, strengthen food security, and stimulate economic growth across Southern Africa.

This version emphasizes practical applications, includes observable benefits, and adds a quote, making it suitable for a farming magazine audience.
