A total of 123 agriculture graduates under the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) unemployed graduate programme received their Certificates of Competence after completing the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Agribusiness Management Programme. The graduation ceremony was held at TUT’s Mbombela Campus and marked a milestone in developing skilled and innovative agribusiness professionals.

The programme was implemented through DARDLEA’s Structured Agricultural Training Chief Directorate in partnership with Tshwane Business School and TSB. The collaboration aims to equip graduates with management and entrepreneurship skills that are essential for driving innovation and sustainability within the agriculture sector.

The Agribusiness Management Programme was designed to bridge the gap between agricultural theory and real-world practice. It focused on business management, financial planning, leadership, and enterprise development, preparing graduates not only for formal employment but also for self-employment through agribusiness ventures. Participants also received hands-on exposure to business case studies and mentorship from industry professionals, giving them the tools to manage profitable and sustainable agricultural enterprises.

Speaking during the ceremony, representatives from DARDLEA and TUT highlighted the importance of building a generation of young farmers who combine agricultural knowledge with entrepreneurial thinking. They emphasized that agriculture is evolving rapidly and requires skilled individuals who can adapt to changing market conditions, apply modern technologies, and manage agribusinesses effectively.

South Africa’s agricultural sector continues to play a vital role in job creation, food production, and rural development. However, it faces challenges such as climate change, market volatility, and limited access to finance for emerging farmers. By providing targeted training and development opportunities, programmes like this one ensure that graduates are well-prepared to respond to these challenges while contributing to food security and economic growth.

The collaboration between DARDLEA, Tshwane Business School, and TUT reflects a long-term vision to build a more inclusive and competitive agricultural economy. It also aligns with national development goals focused on reducing unemployment among young people and promoting entrepreneurship in rural communities.

The success of the 123 graduates serves as a testament to the value of skills-based education and partnership-driven development. With their new qualifications, these graduates are now better positioned to lead agribusiness initiatives, create employment, and contribute to sustainable development within their communities.

The initiative underscores the collective commitment of all partners to empower youth, strengthen agricultural education, and drive innovation across the sector. It is a practical step toward transforming agriculture into a modern, profitable, and inclusive industry that supports South Africa’s broader economic recovery efforts.
