The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, led by MEC Madoda Sambatha, visited several agricultural projects in Madibeng Local Municipality today as part of the ongoing Thuntsha Lerole Programme. The initiative focuses on supporting community-based projects, improving food security, and creating sustainable agricultural opportunities across North West Province.

The first stop was the Jericho Feedlot, a collaborative project funded by both the provincial and national Departments of Agriculture. MEC Sambatha, accompanied by Head of Department Mr. Thupi Mokhatla, met with the project team to assess progress and discuss what is required to strengthen operations. The feedlot plays an important role in livestock development, providing local farmers with access to structured markets and training in animal production.

The delegation then proceeded to the Greenies Aquaponic Farm, a state-funded project officially handed over to the community today. The farm combines aquaculture and hydroponics to produce fish and vegetables in a sustainable, water-efficient system. It is already operational and has created jobs for residents, demonstrating how innovation in agriculture can drive rural economic development.

As part of its commitment to food security, the Department distributed gardening tools to 10 households and Molelwane Primary School. These tools will support home and school gardens aimed at increasing vegetable production and improving nutrition at community level.

MEC Sambatha emphasized that the Thuntsha Lerole Programme is about more than service delivery—it is about empowering communities to become self-sufficient through agriculture. He noted that these projects show how targeted government investment can translate into local employment, skills development, and sustainable food systems.

Through consistent support and collaboration with local stakeholders, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to advance its goal of building resilient farming communities and ensuring food security across the province.
