Department of Agriculture Hosts Pineapple Production Information Day in Bathurst

The Department of Agriculture recently hosted an Information Day on Pineapple Production at Peninsula Farm in Bathurst. The event brought together local farmers to learn strategies for improving pineapple yields and production quality.

The session was coordinated by Extension Officer Konjiswa Sali and supported by Deputy Director District Coordination Ndlambe & Makana Local Municipality, Nontsikelelo Khatshaza. Farmers had the opportunity to engage with industry experts and stakeholders.

Hercules Dupreez from Kynoch Fertilizer Company presented on fertilizer solutions, highlighting methods to enhance soil health and overall crop performance. Horticulture Scientist Simbongile Lingishe provided technical advice on pineapple management, focusing on best practices for cultivation and harvesting. Vusumzi Pefile from Rural Development shared insights on land reform initiatives and farmer support programmes available to producers.

Deputy Director Khatshaza gave a presentation on the Ilima/Letsema Programme, also known as Ilima Lokulima. She explained how farmers can access production inputs and other support to improve food security and productivity. Khatshaza also highlighted aggregator opportunities, extension support, farmer development, and market access services offered by the Department.

Chris Gidana from Orange Grove Farm, Chairperson of the Bathurst and Port Alfred Farmers Association, encouraged collaboration among farmers. He urged established producers to support smallholder farmers to foster shared growth and development within the community.

Thembekile Mbunge, Local Economic Development Officer from Ndlambe Local Municipality, stressed the importance of partnerships between government, agribusiness, and farmers. She highlighted that strong collaboration is critical to building sustainable local agricultural economies.

The Information Day demonstrated the Department’s commitment to empowering farmers, promoting collaboration, and driving sustainable agricultural development across the province. By providing technical guidance, access to resources, and networking opportunities, the event aimed to strengthen both individual farmer capacity and the broader agricultural sector.
