The continuation of the Million Tree Planting Programme took place today in Matjhabeng Local Municipality, covering the areas of Virginia and Ventersburg. The initiative forms part of a long-term environmental drive aimed at promoting sustainability, improving air quality, and enhancing green spaces across the Free State.
The Chief Director for Environmental Affairs, Ms. Nozi Nkoe, welcomed all participants and acknowledged the presence of sponsors and partners, including Mr. Haseed from the Virginia Solar Plant. She commended the collaboration between government, private partners, and local communities in advancing environmental conservation efforts.
MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Elzabe Rockman, outlined the purpose of the day and expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their continued support. She explained that the Million Tree Planting Programme, launched earlier on Heritage Day in Bloemfontein, will be implemented over the next five years. The initiative aligns with the national tree planting programme and aims to create a sustainable and greener South Africa.
“Today we are continuing with the Million Tree Planting Programme that we launched on Heritage Day in Bloemfontein. The programme will be completed over the next five years and links up with the national plan. Our partnership with the private sector is meaningful because we cannot achieve this alone as government. Trees bring many benefits, and we want to plant them in safe places where people can take care of them,” said MEC Rockman.
MEC Rockman was joined by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Service and Law Enforcement, Councillor Tlake from Matjhabeng Local Municipality. Together, they participated in the symbolic planting of trees across several key sites, including Meloding Cemetery, Virginia Cemetery, Selang Day Care Centre, and Phahameng Day Care in Ventersburg.
The initiative demonstrates the province’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement. Through partnerships with private stakeholders and active community participation, the Million Tree Planting Programme continues to promote environmental awareness, restore local ecosystems, and build greener, healthier communities in the Free State.
