The Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and private sector experts, successfully concluded a three-day practical workshop on feedlot management at Mdeni Feedlot in Kumkani, Mhlontlo Local Municipality, OR Tambo District. The training formed part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to build farmer capacity and advance the Red Meat Commercialisation Strategy.
The workshop focused on equipping farmers with practical skills and technical knowledge in feedlot operations, cattle growth, nutrition, and overall herd management. Participants gained hands-on experience in feed types, growth implants, health monitoring, and operational best practices designed to improve efficiency and productivity in commercial red meat production.

Today marked the final day of the programme, during which 45 farmers from Alfred Nzo, King Sabata Dalindyebo, and Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipalities received certificates of attendance. These certificates acknowledged their commitment to enhancing their farming practices and contributing to the growth of the red meat sector.
One of the certificate recipients, Mr Mongameli Bhisho Sulenkama, noted that the training helped him identify and correct areas in his feedlot operations where he had been previously underperforming. “I learned a lot from the sessions and now understand how to optimise cattle growth and manage my feedlot more effectively,” he said.
Another recipient, Ms Zimkhitha Magumtha, a female youth farmer who attended the three-day training at Mount Frere Remeat Trade in Lugangeni Feedlot, described the programme as highly informative. She highlighted lessons on feed types, cattle growth, and growth implants, and encouraged other youth to explore opportunities in agriculture. “This training has shown me that agriculture can be both profitable and rewarding,” she said.
The Department of Agriculture commended all 45 participants for their dedication and active participation. Officials emphasised that such initiatives are critical for empowering emerging farmers, promoting sustainable practices, and driving growth in South Africa’s red meat industry.
The workshop is part of a broader strategy to modernise the sector, encourage youth involvement, and strengthen the capacity of farmers to adopt best practices in feedlot management. The Department urged more youth and emerging farmers to take part in future programmes that provide practical skills, knowledge, and pathways to commercial success in agriculture.
