The Agricultural Research Council’s (ARC) Animal Production division at the Irene campus recently hosted Dr Christian Duff from the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) in Australia. He was accompanied by Dr Mario Beffa, CEO of the Livestock Registering Federation (LRF), and other members of the LRF. The visit provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange and showcased the latest developments in livestock improvement.

During the visit, the ARC team presented research from the Animal Breeding & Genetics unit and Beef Recording programs. These presentations highlighted ongoing work in breeding strategies, genetic evaluation, and herd management, demonstrating ARC’s commitment to advancing livestock productivity in South Africa.

Dr Duff provided an overview of ABRI, detailing its services and the Breedplan system, which supports genetic evaluation and herd improvement across multiple livestock breeds. The session allowed ARC staff and local stakeholders to gain insights into international best practices in breeding and livestock management.

The visit is expected to strengthen collaboration between the ARC and Australian partners, opening doors for future joint projects, technical exchanges, and the adoption of innovative livestock improvement strategies. By aligning local programs with global standards, the ARC aims to enhance genetic selection, improve herd performance, and support sustainable livestock production in South Africa.

This engagement underscores the importance of international partnerships in agriculture, providing ARC with tools, expertise, and networks to drive innovation and improve outcomes for farmers and the broader livestock industry.
