The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC, Ms Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has commended the strides made in modern agricultural initiatives at the Dube Tradeport in La Mercy, situated on the north coast of Durban.

The AgriZone precinct, one of the largest of its kind in Africa, covers 16 hectares of advanced greenhouse facilities. It supports a range of high-value crops, including cannabis hemp and cucumber, while also housing a seed multiplication laboratory. These projects demonstrate how innovation can expand agricultural productivity and create sustainable farming systems.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa was a guest speaker at the KwaZulu-Natal Workshop on Sustainable Feedstock Programme, an initiative driven by Trisab and the KwaZulu-Natal Emerging Rural Agribusiness (KZNERA). The programme seeks to transform the province’s agricultural sector into a more inclusive, future-ready industry. It emphasizes the importance of empowering emerging farmers, improving market access, and scaling operations in line with global food security demands.

In her address, KaMadlopha-Mthethwa noted that initiatives at Dube Tradeport present a significant opportunity for emerging Black farmers. She stressed that market access remains one of the most critical factors in achieving sustainable agriculture. By connecting farmers to formal supply chains, the programme is expected to enhance competitiveness and stimulate economic growth in rural communities.

The AgriZone’s controlled-environment farming technologies provide consistent yields while reducing risks associated with climate change. The focus on cannabis hemp reflects a growing interest in high-value crops that can contribute to both local economies and international trade. The seed multiplication laboratory further strengthens food security by ensuring a steady supply of quality planting materials.

The workshop also highlighted the potential for sustainable feedstock production to support multiple industries, from energy to pharmaceuticals. By creating a reliable supply of raw materials, KwaZulu-Natal aims to position itself as a leader in agricultural innovation on the continent.

Through initiatives such as these, KwaZulu-Natal is working to ensure that agriculture remains a driver of economic transformation and rural development. The progress at Dube Tradeport signals a future where innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability define the province’s agricultural landscape.
