The Department of Agriculture’s Extension and Advisory Services, in collaboration with Veterinary Services, hosted a farmers information day at the Vryburg Banquet Hall yesterday under the theme “Empowering Livestock Farmers Through Knowledge, Innovation and Sustainable Practices.” The initiative brought together experts, stakeholders, and emerging farmers to share practical solutions and scientific insights aimed at improving livestock farming in the region.
The event focused on equipping farmers with the tools needed to increase productivity while ensuring sustainable farming. Sessions covered critical areas such as animal health management, nutrition, disease prevention, and the use of innovative farming technologies. Farmers were also guided on the importance of adopting climate-smart practices to improve resilience and reduce losses caused by changing weather conditions.
Yesterday, the Kaonafatso Ya Dikgomo Farmer’s Day was held in Ventersdorp in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Council. This event complemented today’s program by addressing cattle improvement programs, herd management, and strategies for enhancing the genetic quality of livestock. Experts highlighted the role of scientific research in improving farming outputs and gave farmers practical demonstrations on livestock handling and breeding.
Both events underscored the department’s commitment to empowering emerging farmers by creating access to information and building networks between research institutions, government, and local farming communities. Farmers were encouraged to make use of veterinary services to protect animal health and adopt innovative approaches that can open new market opportunities.
Through these platforms, the department aims to strengthen food security, promote sustainable livestock farming, and drive economic growth in rural areas. By investing in knowledge-sharing and collaboration, the government continues to support farmers in building productive and resilient agricultural enterprises.
