The National Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), has launched a two-day #agroclimatesymposium at the ARC-VIMP Campus in Roodeplaat. The event, taking place from 9 to 10 September 2025, focuses on building resilience in South Africa’s agricultural sector through collaboration, technology, and innovation.
Experts in climate science, policy, and agricultural innovation have gathered to share knowledge and explore solutions to secure the nation’s food future. Delegates are engaging in dynamic sessions where science and policy converge to create practical strategies for farmers and stakeholders. These discussions are sparking fresh ideas, fostering strong partnerships, and shaping new approaches to address the challenges of climate change.
Ms Lydia Bosoga, Acting Chief Director: Natural Resources and Disaster Management, outlined the purpose of the symposium. She stressed the need to unite research institutions, government, academia, and the private sector in sharing climate data and strategies that enable adaptive and productive farming.
In his keynote address, Dr Litha Magingxa, CEO and President of the ARC, highlighted the central role of climate in shaping food systems. “Every food we eat is not shaped only by the farmer’s hands but also by the climate of yesterday,” he said, underscoring the urgency of integrating climate science into agricultural practices.
The symposium provides a platform for dialogue on how technology and innovation can transform farming. Topics include the use of advanced data systems to predict weather patterns, sustainable land management practices, and policies that can protect smallholder farmers from the worst impacts of climate shocks.
By bringing together experts and decision-makers, the #agroclimatesymposium is positioning South Africa to strengthen its agricultural resilience. The event reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that future generations can rely on a secure and sustainable food system.
