Farmers from four districts in Limpopo convened in Ga-Raweshe, Ga-Matlala, under the Blouberg Local Municipality within the Capricorn North Western Agro-Ecological Zone, to mark the annual Limpopo Citrus Farmers Day.
The event was made possible through collaboration between LDARD, LandBank SA, CGA Grower Development Company, Lona, Khulq, Henley and Du Roi Nurseries, Letaba, Laeveld Agrochem, Mahela Group, and River Bioscience. Farmers gained access to resources, insights, and networking opportunities to strengthen their citrus production practices.
Themed Citrus Production Unlocking Rural Development, the gathering featured presentations on compliance with production standards, biosecurity on citrus farms, industry training and bursary opportunities, control of citrus pests and diseases, and funding options for expansion. The sessions aimed to improve produce quality, reduce pest-related risks, equip youth with skills and bursaries, enhance farm competitiveness, and create sustainable growth opportunities with market access.
Deputy Director for Capricorn North Western at the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Makgato Raletjatji, addressed attendees. He highlighted programs and support initiatives designed to help citrus farmers upscale operations and achieve self-sufficiency.
South Africa ranks as the second largest global citrus producer. Providing rural and small-scale farmers with the right tools and knowledge is critical for penetrating export markets and contributing to the national GDP. The event reinforced the importance of empowering farmers to strengthen both local communities and the country’s agricultural economy.
