Minister Willie Aucamp Calls for Priority Crime Classification for Farm Attacks

Speaking at the TLU SA Congress 2026 at the CSIR International Conference Centre in Pretoria, Minister of Agriculture Willie Aucamp delivered a firm message regarding the escalating threat of farm attacks across South Africa.

Addressing congress delegates, media and agricultural stakeholders, the Minister stressed that rural safety is directly linked to national stability.

“We must also talk directly about farm safety,” Minister Aucamp stated. “Crime on farms cannot be treated as ordinary illegal activity. Farm attacks must be officially classified as priority crimes. They strike at food security, rural stability and human life.”

Government Strategy and New Safety Framework

To address these security challenges, Minister Aucamp highlighted ongoing high-level engagements with key law enforcement leaders, including Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron.

The Minister announced that a revamped Rural Safety Plan is scheduled to be formally tabled early next year to bolster dedicated rural policing capacity.

“We are pushing for stronger State policing and dedicated capacity,” Aucamp noted. “But we must be honest with each other. The police cannot be everywhere. They cannot do everything.”

A Call for Self-Reliance and Community Action

While advocating for increased state resources, Minister Aucamp emphasized the vital role of local community initiative and proactive security measures for agricultural households.

He urged farming communities to strengthen their defensive networks alongside police efforts.

“Farmers must take legal steps to protect their own families and properties,” Aucamp urged. “Join your local farm watch. Create clear communication networks with your neighbours. Install early-warning security technology. Control access to your land. Self-reliance and strong community safety networks save lives.”

The Minister concluded that protecting rural areas and securing agricultural operations are essential preconditions for ensuring long-term food security and economic vitality in South Africa.
