Moalosi Duncan Serapelwane is a Black South African Bonsmara stud breeder who has spent more than two decades building a respected cattle breeding operation in the North West province. He took over the family farming business from his father in 2002 and introduced a new farming model focused on structured breeding, quality genetics and long term sustainability. The family began farming at Vaniekerk Farm, a government farm, with fewer than 25 cows. From those modest beginnings, Serapelwane steadily grew his herd and refined his breeding strategy. Today, his operation stands as a model of how disciplined livestock management and vision can transform a small herd into a nationally recognised Bonsmara stud.
The MDS brand was officially registered in 2007, marking a turning point in his journey. Registration was not only a business decision but a commitment to building a legacy for future generations. Serapelwane often describes Moalosi Bonsmara as a generation to generation business, created for his children and their children. By formalising the brand, he positioned his stud within structured breeding systems and ensured credibility in the competitive beef industry. Over the past 21 years, he has focused on producing quality Bonsmara bulls and heifers that improve herd performance, fertility and profitability.
Moalosi Bonsmara concentrates on breeding animals that assist both emerging and established farmers to strengthen their stock. His bulls are selected for growth rate, adaptability and carcass quality, traits that are essential in commercial beef production. By making high quality genetics accessible to both black and white farmers, Serapelwane contributes to inclusive growth in the livestock sector. He also mentors young and upcoming farmers by sharing practical knowledge on animal health, breeding management and business fundamentals. Regular farmer days hosted on his farm create space for learning, networking and exposure to industry standards.
In 2026, Serapelwane will take this commitment further by hosting the first Moalosi Duncan Serapelwane Agricultural Expo in Morokweng village, outside Vryburg. The event will run from 30 April to 2 May 2026 at Moalosi Bonsmaras Farm, approximately 140 kilometres from Vryburg in the North West province. The expo aims to bring world class agricultural knowledge, innovation and opportunity directly to rural communities. It is designed as a multi day platform where farmers, agribusinesses and students can engage in hands on workshops, masterclasses, live demonstrations and exhibitions. Topics will range from livestock production and agro processing to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in agriculture.
According to Serapelwane, the expo is a strategic investment in farmers, youth and the future of agriculture in rural South Africa. It builds on the success of previous masterclasses and farmer days that attracted participants from across South Africa and neighbouring Botswana. Many attendees requested longer and more structured learning opportunities, which led to the creation of this large scale agricultural event. Key objectives include exposing farmers to modern technologies, strengthening mentorship between commercial and small scale producers and creating partnerships across the agricultural value chain. The expo also seeks to empower women, youth, people living with disabilities and military veterans while promoting agro tourism and rural economic development.
Serapelwane is widely respected for his dedication to farmer development and his involvement in initiatives such as Donate a Heifer, which supports young livestock farmers. He believes that farming can address food security, reduce unemployment and create sustainable livelihoods when supported by knowledge and collaboration. Through Moalosi Bonsmara and the MDS Agricultural Expo, he continues to invest in skills transfer and rural prosperity. His journey from a small herd on a government farm to a recognised Bonsmara stud breeder proves that vision, discipline and commitment can build a lasting agricultural legacy in the North West province.
