Brad O’Neill, a third-generation sugarcane farmer from the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, has built a remarkable journey blending family heritage, sustainable farming, and craft distilling. Born into the O’Neill family, Brad grew up on Seafield Farm, where he learned the fundamentals of sugarcane cultivation and mixed farming under the guidance of his parents. In 2000, he left for Stellenbosch to study sports science, but he soon found himself drawn to the wine industry. He enrolled at the Cape Wine Academy, gaining hands-on experience in viticulture, winemaking, marketing, and logistics. During this time, he met Marisa, a Cape Town native and fellow student, who would become his partner in life, farming, and business.

After several years working in Cape Town’s wine and hospitality sectors, Brad returned to Seafield Farm in 2010 following the untimely death of his father, Roger O’Neill. The farm spans over 300 hectares, with approximately 200 hectares dedicated to sugarcane, and it was here that Brad committed himself to sustainable, precision agriculture. Without formal agricultural training, he enrolled in sugar courses and learned on the job, gradually converting the farm into a 100 per cent sugarcane operation. Brad’s approach emphasizes biodynamic practices, soil health, and climate adaptation strategies, including year-long fallow programmes, multi-species green manure crops, and reduced chemical inputs. He has also implemented staff upliftment programs, ongoing education, and improved living conditions to foster a motivated and skilled workforce.

Brad’s vision extends beyond farming into value-added production. Inspired by estate rum producers in Mauritius and encouraged by his father, he and Marisa founded Sugar Baron Craft Distillery in 2018. Using a 100-litre column still and later upgrading to a 200-litre hybrid still named “The Baroness,” they developed their first product, Sugar Baron Single Estate Craft White Rum, launched in November 2019. The distillery produces farm-to-bottle rum using freshly-pressed sugarcane juice, following the Agricole style, with careful fermentation, distillation, and ageing in glass demijohns and barrels. Sugar Baron has expanded its offerings to include barrel-aged rum and a confectionery range featuring rum fudge and rum fudge sauce.

Brad’s work has earned him recognition within the agricultural community. In 2021, he was named the KZN Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year, celebrated for his technical competence, sustainable farming practices, and commitment to value-added enterprise. He represented KwaZulu-Natal in the Toyota SA/Agri SA National Young Farmer of the Year Competition, competing with top farmers from all nine provinces. Under Brad’s leadership, Seafield Farm now supports 20 permanent staff and ten seasonal workers, balancing operational excellence with employee welfare.

Throughout his journey, Brad emphasizes the importance of passion, practical experience, and continuous learning. He advises aspiring farmers to combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on work, focus on sustainable practices, and remain committed to building a legacy for future generations. With Sugar Baron, Brad and Marisa O’Neill have transformed their family farm into a model of modern agriculture and craft distilling, demonstrating how dedication, innovation, and a love for the land can produce world-class sugarcane products and premium rum.
