Three Magadla sisters are making a significant impact in agriculture in Caba Village, Matatiele Ward 20, under Alfred Nzo District. Gcokazi Magadla (60), Suthukazi Magadla (66), and Chairperson Lwandlekazi Magadla (61) run a 10-hectare maize production project that combines family effort with structured farming practices. Their work highlights the role of women in advancing rural agriculture.
The project produces around 15 tonnes of maize at each harvest. The sisters supply grain traders in Kokstad and sell directly to local households. This approach ensures a steady market while supporting the community with reliable food supply. Their production demonstrates how small-scale initiatives can scale with proper planning and management.
Technical support from the Department of Agriculture is a key factor in the project’s success. The sisters receive essential production inputs for the full 10 hectares, including seeds, fertilizer, and ongoing guidance. This assistance improves yields and ensures sustainable farming practices.
MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe visited the farm to assess progress and engage directly with the sisters. The visit focused on understanding challenges, identifying opportunities, and coordinating the department’s interventions to strengthen the project. Discussions included access to inputs, production techniques, and market linkages to ensure long-term viability.
The Magadla sisters’ initiative exemplifies how women-led agricultural projects can drive economic growth and food security in rural communities. Their dedication, supported by government programs, sets a model for sustainable smallholder farming in the Alfred Nzo District.
