In the rural town of eShowe, KwaZulu-Natal, Ayanda Zulu is rewriting the story of modern agriculture. As the founder of Wenzokuhle Farming, a thriving commercial livestock and crop enterprise, she has become a symbol of perseverance and purpose in South Africa’s farming community.
When Ayanda began her journey in 2016, she had no background in agriculture. She faced uncertainty and countless challenges but remained determined to learn. “I had to go through different doors seeking assistance from established farmers and farming institutions,” she recalls. Her persistence paid off. Through mentorship, training, and self-education, she gained the knowledge needed to start her own enterprise.

After registering Wenzokuhle Farming, Ayanda started with small-scale crop and vegetable production before expanding into livestock. Today, her farm produces a variety of healthy crops including beans, cabbage, and maize. She also manages a growing herd of Beefmasters, Brahmans, and Boer goats, positioning her operation as both productive and sustainable.

Her story reflects the potential of agriculture to empower individuals and communities. “Farming in South Africa stands a good chance at being the best economy vehicle in the future if young people could be encouraged to venture into it,” she says. Ayanda believes the sector holds immense opportunity for both educated and uneducated youth, provided there is access to training and mentorship. “We also need more agriculture colleges and skills training programmes,” she adds.
Ayanda is also passionate about changing perceptions around farming. “Farming generates so much money to the economy, but we can’t see it because many of our people still see it as a dirty job,” she explains. Her journey challenges that mindset, showing that agriculture is a powerful tool for economic growth and personal independence.
Beyond her own achievements, Ayanda is focused on inspiring the next generation. She is teaching her daughter the value of agriculture, though she admits it is not an easy task. “As a child she must dream yet remain cognisant that success lies in hard work,” Ayanda says.
Wenzokuhle Farming continues to grow, combining traditional knowledge with modern practices. Through resilience and vision, Ayanda Zulu has built more than a business. She has built a legacy of empowerment and sustainability, proving that with dedication and courage, anyone can transform the soil beneath their feet into a foundation for success.
