The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in partnership with the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership and DEKALB, recently hosted a highly successful farmers’ field day at the Mandiwana Irrigation Scheme in Nzhelele, within the Makhado Local Municipality. The event provided a practical platform for farmers to enhance their knowledge of maize production techniques and modern agricultural practices. By combining demonstration plots with expert guidance, participants were able to see the direct impact of hybrid maize seeds on crop performance. This hands-on approach ensured that farmers could connect theory with practice, improving their ability to implement new strategies on their own farms. The field day highlighted the commitment of both public and private sector partners to support smallholder farmers in adopting sustainable, high-yielding practices.

During the event, AFAP specialists led guided tours of DEKALB demonstration plots, showing how hybrid maize varieties perform under local conditions. Farmers received detailed explanations on planting techniques, crop management, and the importance of timely interventions to maximize productivity. Training sessions emphasized the correct use of fertilizers to enhance soil fertility and support consistent yields throughout the growing season. This practical exposure allowed farmers to evaluate the results of improved inputs and techniques, giving them confidence to replicate these methods in their fields. By directly engaging with the experts and observing tangible results, participants gained actionable insights that could immediately improve their operations.

The field day also fostered collaboration between multiple agricultural stakeholders. Representatives from Madzivhandila College of Agriculture, Bayer, Agricity, and Thohoyandou Farm City were present to share expertise and resources. Their involvement reinforced the importance of partnerships in strengthening the agricultural sector and providing smallholder farmers with access to modern technologies. The “seeing is believing” approach used throughout the event proved effective in demonstrating the advantages of hybrid maize biotechnology. Farmers were able to compare results, ask questions, and understand how these innovations could translate into higher yields and better-quality crops. This interactive environment encouraged knowledge sharing and created a network of support for participants beyond the event.

Attendance at the field day included farmers from several irrigation schemes such as Mandiwana, Mamuhohi, and Raliphaswa, as well as members of Ha-Rabali farmer groups. Smallholder farmers from nearby villages, including Pfumbada, Tshirolwe, Divhani, and Ha-Mulelu, also joined, reflecting strong community interest in adopting improved farming practices. Participants were eager to learn practical methods that could enhance productivity and profitability on their farms. The event provided a rare opportunity for farmers to engage with experts, exchange experiences, and gain insights into emerging agricultural trends. The collective participation underscored the growing demand for knowledge-driven approaches in local maize production.

The Mandiwana farmers’ field day successfully demonstrated how public-private collaboration can empower smallholder farmers and drive agricultural development. By providing hands-on training, exposure to hybrid seed performance, and practical guidance on fertilizer application, the event equipped farmers with the tools to increase maize yields and improve food security in the region. The involvement of industry partners and educational institutions ensured that participants received expert advice and ongoing support. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to modernizing farming practices while strengthening rural livelihoods. Farmers left the event better prepared to apply innovative techniques, ultimately contributing to a more productive and resilient agricultural sector in Limpopo.
