InteliGro has announced the launch of the Croplan® seed brand in South Africa, marking a significant step in bringing internationally established genetics to local producers. The first cultivar to enter the market is a white maize hybrid, which has undergone several seasons of rigorous testing on both research plots and commercial farms. These trials evaluated performance under diverse South African conditions to ensure reliability and adaptability. The introduction of Croplan® aligns with InteliGro’s strategy of combining global genetics with local agronomic expertise and field-based data. Producers will have the opportunity to see the hybrid firsthand at NAMPO Harvest Day 2026, where it will be showcased alongside supporting agronomic insights.
Croplan® is internationally recognised for high-performance genetics and detailed trial data, developed by the US-based company WinField United. Janet Lawless, Marketing Manager at InteliGro, highlighted that local introduction required thorough testing under South African conditions to confirm the hybrid’s suitability. Selection of cultivars relied not only on genetic potential but also on extensive trial data and local experience. The goal is not simply to provide another seed product, but to equip farmers with better information and agronomic support for more informed production decisions. InteliGro’s approach ensures that producers have access to reliable performance data and practical recommendations for each hybrid.
The development of Croplan® in South Africa has been ongoing for nearly eight years, following InteliGro’s initial collaboration with WinField United. Barry Erasmus, Commercial Manager at InteliGro, explained that the focus was on securing the right genetics and building strong partnerships before the brand was introduced locally. Traceability and consistent quality were prioritised to establish trust with producers. The aim is to combine proven international genetics with local agronomic knowledge, enabling farmers to make confident planting decisions. This approach recognises that trust in seed is critical for production planning and long-term farm sustainability.
Local trials were established to evaluate hybrid performance across different regions and production environments. Christo Jacobs, Seed Specialist at InteliGro, explained that these trials measured consistency across seasons and varying conditions. Data collected through InteliGro’s Intelekt Solutions and InField Solutions programmes provided insights from small research plots and commercial farms. This comprehensive approach allows the company to assess crop performance holistically, considering soil conditions, plant population, nutrition, and climate. Lawless emphasised that integrating field data with expert advice supports more accurate decision-making and better production outcomes for farmers.
InteliGro positions the introduction of Croplan® as more than a seed launch; it is part of a broader strategy to provide knowledge and support throughout the production system. Crop Advisors work closely with producers to tailor solutions to their specific conditions. Gerrie Ludick, Technical Marketing Specialist at InteliGro, noted that genetics set the potential of a crop, but proper agronomic practices determine actual yield. By combining reliable data with technical insight, InteliGro aims to help producers achieve sustainable and profitable farming. The new hybrid will be featured at InteliGro’s “On the Road to Yield” events and NAMPO Harvest Day 2026, signalling the start of a broader seed portfolio expansion focused on supporting higher yields and stronger returns for South African producers.
