Nine households in Nokaneng under Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality received food garden starter packs and production inputs as part of a government support initiative. The intervention, led by the DARDLEA MEC, Ms Khethiwe Moeketsi, also included the donation of a water tank and the establishment of a food garden at Mmamogaswa Primary School. These measures aim to enhance household food security, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and encourage community engagement in food production. The support was part of the three-day EXCO Outreach and Premier’s Imbizo programme, which concludes today, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing local development needs. By providing both practical resources and training opportunities, the programme enables beneficiaries to improve nutrition, generate income, and build resilience against food shortages.
During the initiative, MEC Moeketsi engaged directly with over 100 farmers at the Nokaneng Community Hall in a stakeholder session designed to address pressing agricultural issues. Farmers raised concerns about challenges affecting their operations, with stock theft identified as a major problem in the area. Discussions also focused on access to resources, market linkages, and strategies to increase productivity despite the obstacles faced by local producers. These engagements provided a platform for farmers to voice their needs and for government representatives to respond with targeted interventions. Through such dialogue, the government can develop policies and programmes that address local realities and support long-term agricultural growth.
In addition to addressing immediate challenges, MEC Moeketsi announced further support for the agricultural sector in the municipality. Five local farmers will receive assistance through the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Program (CASP) in the new financial year, which begins next month. This support will provide access to inputs, training, and other resources necessary to expand production and improve efficiency. By investing in farmers’ capacity and providing structured support, the programme aims to strengthen the local agricultural economy. The initiative also encourages young and emerging farmers to participate actively in farming, ensuring the continuity of food production and economic growth in the region.
Government interventions such as these play a crucial role in driving sustainable development at the community level. By combining resource provision, stakeholder engagement, and long-term support programmes, local farmers are better equipped to overcome challenges and enhance productivity. Food garden starter packs and water infrastructure provide immediate relief and practical tools for success, while programmes like CASP offer strategic assistance for growth and sustainability. These efforts contribute to food security, job creation, and economic resilience in Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality. Overall, the support provided in Nokaneng exemplifies a targeted and integrated approach to agricultural development, benefiting households, schools, and the broader community alike.
