Food security is a fundamental goal that ensures all people have consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. As part of this objective, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continued its Massive Community Outreach Programme today, focusing on Bothaville, Ventersburg, and Thaba Phatswa in the Lejweleputswa District. The programme distributed garden tools and seeds to local households and institutions, aiming to empower communities to grow their own food and improve nutrition. These initiatives address both immediate and long-term food security challenges while promoting sustainable farming practices. By equipping households and public institutions with the necessary inputs, the outreach programme strengthens local agricultural productivity and supports economic resilience in vulnerable communities.

In Thaba Phatswa, 48 households and two public institutions received seeds and gardening tools to start or expand their food gardens. Ward councillor CIIr Sello Machakela highlighted that the support followed a request he made to the MEC early last year, expressing gratitude for the department’s response. The initiative provides practical resources for households to produce fresh vegetables, enhance nutrition, and generate income from surplus produce. Similarly, in Bothaville and Ventersburg, beneficiaries received agricultural inputs that enable small-scale gardens to reduce reliance on emergency food aid. These efforts aim to restore livelihoods, increase household income, and build sustainable food systems, especially in communities that face persistent poverty and food insecurity.

The outreach programme goes beyond providing tools and seeds by including guidance on planting techniques, garden management, and crop selection. Participants are encouraged to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, soil management, and water conservation, which improve productivity over time. This combination of material support and knowledge sharing ensures that beneficiaries can maintain productive gardens year-round. By fostering skills development, the programme also helps communities become more self-reliant and resilient to economic or environmental shocks. Public institutions that received inputs can use gardens as teaching tools, promoting agricultural education and healthy eating habits within their communities.

Overall, the Massive Community Outreach Programme in Lejweleputswa District reflects a comprehensive approach to improving food security and supporting rural development. By distributing seeds, gardening tools, and technical guidance, the Department of Agriculture empowers households and institutions to produce their own food, generate income, and strengthen local economies. The programme addresses immediate nutrition needs while laying the foundation for long-term agricultural sustainability and poverty reduction. Through initiatives like these, vulnerable communities gain practical resources, knowledge, and support, contributing to a resilient and self-sufficient agricultural sector. The combined efforts in Thaba Phatswa, Bothaville, and Ventersburg demonstrate the impact of targeted government interventions in fostering food security and sustainable rural livelihoods.
