The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched a major vaccination campaign to protect cattle against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) using vaccines manufactured by Dollvet in Turkiye. The first phase of the program saw 11 429 cattle inoculated, targeting the SAT 1, SAT 2, and SAT 3 strains of the disease. Vaccinations were administered in the Johannes Phumani Phungula and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma local municipalities within the Harry Gwala District, covering 4 083 and 7 346 cattle respectively. The initiative is part of the province’s ongoing efforts to safeguard livestock health, improve productivity, and prevent economic losses caused by FMD outbreaks. By implementing this vaccination drive, the department aims to strengthen disease control measures and ensure the stability of local farming communities.

The mass vaccination campaign is scheduled to continue in the Harry Gwala District until March 22, reflecting the urgency of widespread protection against FMD. KwaZulu-Natal has received a total of 560 000 doses of Dollvet vaccines, with 160 000 doses allocated specifically to the Milk Producers Organisation (MPO) for use in the same district. These vaccines provide immunity against multiple FMD strains, ensuring comprehensive coverage for both commercial and smallholder cattle herds. Department officials emphasized the importance of timely vaccination to reduce the risk of disease spread and to maintain consistent livestock production. The initiative also includes monitoring and follow-up to track vaccine effectiveness and ensure high participation among farmers.

Vaccinations in the Greater Kokstad and uMzimkhulu local municipalities are scheduled to begin on Sunday, 15 March, marking the next phase of the province-wide effort. The campaign will continue in other areas of KwaZulu-Natal, ensuring that all at-risk districts are covered. Farmers have been briefed on proper handling of vaccinated animals and on maintaining records for reporting purposes. The department is coordinating with local veterinary officers to facilitate smooth implementation and address any logistical challenges that may arise. The campaign also highlights collaboration with community organizations and industry groups to maximize outreach and participation among livestock owners.

During a recent handover of key infrastructure projects at Makhathini in Jozini, MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa reaffirmed the province’s commitment to implementing Dollvet vaccines across KwaZulu-Natal. She emphasized that vaccination is a critical component of the department’s strategy to control FMD and protect livestock-dependent livelihoods. The MEC encouraged all farmers to participate in the program and to follow veterinary guidance to ensure successful outcomes. By combining vaccination efforts with improved biosecurity and infrastructure support, the department seeks to create a sustainable framework for disease prevention. This approach not only protects animal health but also strengthens the economic resilience of rural farming communities.

The launch of the Dollvet vaccine campaign demonstrates KwaZulu-Natal’s proactive response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease, safeguarding cattle populations across the province. Through mass inoculation, monitoring, and community engagement, the department is reducing the risk of outbreaks and ensuring stable livestock production. The coordinated efforts in the Harry Gwala District and upcoming campaigns in other municipalities reflect a structured approach to disease management. By prioritizing vaccination and farmer education, KwaZulu-Natal is building a robust system to protect both livestock and the livelihoods of those who depend on them. The campaign underscores the importance of preventive measures in maintaining food security and sustaining rural economies.
