Farmers and producers in the Free State province were given an opportunity to raise their concerns directly with MEC Elzabe Rockman, responsible for agriculture and rural development. These engagements allow the MEC to assess the effectiveness of departmental support, identify challenges, and ensure that public resources are directed toward farmers who are using them efficiently. The session also provides valuable insights that guide government efforts to better serve the farming community and strengthen agricultural productivity in the province.
Sasolburg farmers highlighted several pressing issues during the engagement, including lease agreements with Metsimaholo Local Municipality, communication barriers with municipal and departmental officials, and the need for essential support such as animal feed and medication. Other concerns included stock theft, limited law enforcement visibility, water provision, fencing, electricity, overgrazing on commonages, and the need for agricultural training. The department committed to formally submitting all concerns to relevant directorates, where MEC Rockman and the Head of Department will continue monitoring implementation and exercising oversight to ensure recommendations are acted upon.
In her address, MEC Rockman emphasized the critical role farmers play in food security and the economic growth of the province and the country. She highlighted the importance of unity among commonage farmers, youth, and women for the successful implementation of agricultural programs. The MEC also advised farmers against moving animals between districts to prevent the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease, and called on municipalities to establish temporary holding facilities for livestock management. These steps are intended to safeguard animal health and support long-term sustainability in farming operations.
Stock theft remains a major challenge for the farming community, and MEC Rockman assured farmers that this issue would receive ongoing attention. She reiterated the department’s commitment to providing training, mechanisation support, and resources to address immediate and long-term agricultural challenges. The session demonstrated the department’s hands-on approach to understanding farmer needs and ensuring that government interventions are practical, timely, and effective.
At the conclusion of the engagement, issues that could be resolved immediately were addressed on the spot, while those requiring further analysis were documented for follow-up. This engagement reinforces the department’s commitment to supporting farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and enhancing food security across the Free State. By maintaining open communication channels and responsive oversight, the MEC aims to ensure that farmers receive the support needed to thrive and contribute to the provincial economy.
