Scores of poultry farmers from across Victor Khanye Local Municipality recently attended a detailed Basic Broiler and Layer Management Training at the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs offices in Delmas. The programme targeted both emerging and established farmers, aiming to enhance local poultry farming practices, improve productivity, and promote sustainable operations in small-scale and commercial poultry enterprises.
The training offered practical guidance on critical aspects of poultry management. Participants learned about proper nutrition for broilers and layers, including feed formulation, feeding schedules, and the role of supplements in growth and egg production. Housing and biosecurity measures were emphasised, with demonstrations on how to build and maintain safe, clean poultry structures that protect flocks from disease. Farmers also received instruction on disease identification, vaccination schedules, and preventative health measures to reduce mortality and improve flock performance. Record keeping and flock monitoring were covered to help farmers track growth, egg production, and overall profitability.
Extension Advisors under Animal Production actively engaged participants, providing personalised advice on flock management, market opportunities, and strategies to scale operations. Young and older farmers, as well as those interested in entering the poultry sector, were encouraged to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to their specific needs. This interaction ensured that all participants left with practical skills they could immediately apply to their farms.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen local poultry production in Victor Khanye Municipality, promote food security, and support rural economic development. By equipping farmers with knowledge, hands-on skills, and access to expert advice, the programme empowers them to operate sustainable, profitable poultry enterprises. It also fosters community resilience by encouraging best practices that improve productivity while minimising disease risks and losses.
