In a collaborative initiative, the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD), the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and the South African Police Service (SAPS) provided specialised training to Moratapelo farmers in Ga-Chuene and the Capricorn North Western Agro-Ecological Zone. The programme focused on small stock production, equipping emerging farmers with practical skills to improve livestock management, increase productivity, and strengthen rural economies.
The training covered key aspects of small stock farming, including the management of indigenous breeds, breeding and selection techniques, proper nutrition, disease prevention, and effective record keeping. Farmers also received guidance on sustainable livestock practices designed to preserve indigenous species while promoting economic viability. By enhancing knowledge and practical skills, the initiative supports emerging farmers, encourages responsible livestock management, and contributes to food security. The programme ultimately aims to build resilient rural communities capable of sustaining agricultural growth and protecting valuable indigenous livestock resources.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of partnerships between government departments, research institutions, and law enforcement in promoting agricultural development. By empowering farmers with specialised knowledge, the project not only boosts productivity but also strengthens rural livelihoods, fostering long-term economic growth and community resilience. Such initiatives play a critical role in developing sustainable agricultural practices, preserving indigenous livestock, and ensuring food security in Limpopo’s rural areas.
