The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s MEC, Ms Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, recently visited the Bhambanana Red Meat Abattoir in Jozini to assess infrastructure functionality and promote transparency and accountability. Built in 2012, the abattoir was designed to stimulate regional economic growth, create jobs, and address the devastating effects of the 2011 Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak. The MEC’s visit coincided with the official handover of the facility to ECA Consulting (PTY) Ltd, the newly appointed service provider tasked with completing renovations valued at R16.45 million.

ECA Consulting will undertake the remaining repairs and upgrades to ensure full compliance with Veterinary Public Health (VPH) standards. Work will address critical issues, including the slaughtering line height, port size, and installation of headwrecks and hoof stations. The project also covers improvements to the overnight cold room, chillers, offal rooms, carcass dispatch areas, lairages for cattle and sheep, and livestock off-loading facilities. These renovations are designed to enhance operational efficiency and safety for both staff and animals.

The uMkhanyakude District faces socio-economic challenges such as high unemployment and widespread poverty, with agriculture, particularly livestock farming, being the main economic driver. The abattoir plays a key role in linking farmers to markets, supporting income generation, and stabilising the local livestock industry. The facility can process up to 60 cattle per day, making it a vital resource for the community.

Commenting on the handover, MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa expressed optimism about the abattoir’s potential to protect farmers from Foot-and-Mouth Disease. She stressed the importance of integrity in the project, warning against corruption by officials or traditional leaders demanding kickbacks. “We want this project to be up and running and used optimally. This project is the first step in addressing Foot-and-Mouth Disease in the region,” she said.

The completion of renovations is expected by July 2027. Once fully operational, the Bhambanana Red Meat Abattoir will strengthen regional food security, provide sustainable employment opportunities, and ensure that local farmers have access to a compliant, efficient facility to process and market their livestock.
