Woodview Farm in the Free State province of South Africa has become synonymous with premium Wagyu beef, thanks to the vision of Brian and Megan Angus. Brian Angus first explored the opportunities of Wagyu cattle in the 1990s during an Angus conference tour in the United States. Fascinated by the breed’s superior marbling and genetics, he imported Wagyu stock directly from Japanese breeder Shogo Takeda, becoming the first Wagyu breeder in South Africa. Over the years, Brian’s precision in breeding established Woodview Wagyu as a herd of world-class genetics, earning him the title of South Africa’s “Wagyu godfather.”

Brian’s expertise laid the foundation, but it was his daughter Megan Angus who elevated Woodview to the international arena. Megan, who holds a marketing and advertising degree from the University of Cape Town, returned to the family farm in 2013 after working on yachts across Miami and other destinations. Encouraged by her parents to help market their unique product, Megan recognised the potential of Woodview Wagyu and launched the family’s Wagyu and Angus beef business in 2014. She faced steep learning curves, from mastering meat cutting and packaging design to understanding premium product marketing and export regulations.

In 2016, Woodview Farm joined forces with the Van Reenen family of Sparta Beef, leveraging over 50 years of world-class beef production experience. This collaboration combined Brian’s superior breeding skills with Sparta’s expertise in feeding cattle to their optimum potential. The partnership allowed Woodview Wagyu to achieve consistent, high-quality beef that offers a unique gastronomic experience. Today, the farm produces free-range, pasture-reared, and grain-fed Wagyu cattle, raised without antibiotics or unnatural additives, ensuring full traceability and premium standards from farm to plate.

Under Megan’s leadership, Woodview Wagyu has grown into a multi-award-winning enterprise. In 2017, the farm won a silver award in the small business category at the Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was recognised as an FNB Business of the Year. It was also selected as a National Gazelle by the Department of Small Business Development, highlighting its strong growth potential. The farm now supplies Wagyu products, including premium burgers, to Food Lovers Market, the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff in Johannesburg, and major grocery chains across South Africa.

Wagyu beef is renowned worldwide for its exceptional marbling, tenderness, and flavour. The breed’s intramuscular fat melts at room temperature, enhancing texture, while naturally containing higher levels of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats. These traits, combined with meticulous breeding and animal welfare practices at Woodview, make the beef both luxurious and healthier than conventional alternatives.

The success of Woodview Wagyu demonstrates the power of combining traditional farming knowledge with modern business skills. Brian Angus’s pioneering work in Wagyu breeding, paired with Megan’s marketing expertise and vision, has positioned South Africa on the global Wagyu map. Woodview continues to focus on quality over quantity, maintaining a vertically integrated system that ensures traceability, sustainability, and unmatched flavour. The farm exemplifies how innovation, family legacy, and strategic partnerships can transform a niche cattle breed into a world-class South African brand.
