Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Elzabe Rockman, recently held a direct engagement with farmers in Reddersburg and surrounding areas to discuss pressing issues affecting local agriculture. The meeting provided a platform for farmers to highlight challenges such as infrastructure deficits, limited water access, stock theft, overgrazing, lease agreement disputes, and conflicts within cooperatives that hinder their operations.
During the discussions, farmers emphasized the need for improved mechanization, fencing, training programs, and access to essential agricultural inputs to increase productivity and sustainability. MEC Rockman encouraged unity among farmers, stressing that collaboration is key to enhancing service delivery and addressing sectoral challenges effectively. She also indicated that the Department is exploring opportunities for expanding commonage land and accessing funding for the 2026/27 period to support local agricultural initiatives.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reaffirmed its commitment to providing targeted support, building capacity, and delivering practical solutions to ensure sustainable agricultural success in Reddersburg. MEC Rockman’s engagement reflects a proactive approach to understanding farmers’ needs and fostering an environment that promotes growth, innovation, and resilience in the Free State agricultural sector.
