Deputy Minister Nokuzola Capa visited Roselands Farm in Ramsgate, KwaZulu-Natal, to engage directly with banana growers on managing Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV). The visit included a hands-on demonstration on how to identify aphids, the small insects responsible for spreading this damaging virus.

During the field session, Deputy Minister Capa guided farmers on early detection techniques, highlighting the importance of spotting aphids before they infest entire plantations. Early identification allows growers to take immediate action, reducing crop loss and protecting their livelihoods.

The Deputy Minister is also scheduled to hand over essential agrochemicals to local banana farmers. These inputs are critical in controlling aphid populations and mitigating the spread of BBTV. Officials stressed that combining chemical control with monitoring and good farming practices provides the best protection for banana crops.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to support small-scale and commercial banana growers in KwaZulu-Natal. By empowering farmers with practical knowledge and resources, the Department aims to strengthen food security, improve crop yields, and sustain the local agricultural economy. Deputy Minister Capa reinforced the message that early detection and proper management of BBTV are key to healthier crops and stronger livelihoods for banana producers across the province.
