The three-day 1st Annual Regional Moringa Conference took place from 23 to 25 October at The Ranch Resort and Hotel in Polokwane, hosted by the University of Limpopo. The conference brought together researchers, innovators, farmers, and industry stakeholders from across Africa to explore the full potential of Moringa as a driver of agricultural sustainability, economic development, and community empowerment.
Under the theme, “Moringa – Africa’s Green Gold: Unlocking Health, Wealth, and Sustainability,” the event featured research-driven presentations, panel discussions, exhibitions, and interactive engagements. Key topics included indigenous crop agro-processing, product testing and conformity moderation, innovation systems for the 4th Industrial Revolution, funding pathways, value chain development, and commercialisation strategies. Experts highlighted how Moringa can transition from a traditional herb into a high-value crop that contributes to health, wealth, and environmental sustainability.
The conference also examined opportunities beyond agriculture, including African natural medicines, cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals, and health infusion beverages. Delegates explored ways to create market channels that could position Limpopo as the centre of South Africa’s Moringa economy while promoting sustainable livelihoods and community development.
Keynote addresses featured Dr Carrie Waterman from the University of California, USA, and Prof Kudakwashe Chitindingu from the Chinoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe, providing international perspectives on Moringa cultivation, product innovation, and commercialisation. Discussions emphasised collaboration, innovation, and research as essential tools to elevate Moringa as a smart crop with social, environmental, and economic benefits.
The conference served as a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and partnership building, uniting experts and practitioners committed to transforming Moringa into Africa’s “green gold.” Over the three days, delegates engaged in practical sessions, interactive workshops, and exhibitions, all aimed at unlocking the crop’s potential for sustainable agriculture and economic prosperity.
The 1st Annual Regional Moringa Conference successfully highlighted the role of Moringa in health, wealth creation, and sustainability, planting the seeds for a resilient, innovative, and inclusive agricultural future in Limpopo and beyond.
