Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has welcomed the formal decision by Zimbabwean authorities to lift the ban on the importation of maize and other grains, as outlined in the new Statutory Instrument (SI) 87 of 2025. The minister described the move as a return to sound economic principles vital for the prosperity and stability of the Southern African region.

Minister Steenhuisen highlighted the importance of the Zimbabwean market for both white and yellow maize. He noted that exports help stabilise local prices and contribute to regional food security.

“This is an extremely welcome development that underscores the collective responsibility we share in ensuring food sufficiency,” Minister Steenhuisen said. He added that the agricultural sector thrives on predictability and efficiency, and that restrictive trade measures, while often intended to protect local producers, can distort markets and ultimately harm consumers.

The minister emphasised that removing the ban is critical for food security and consumer welfare across the region. He noted that allowing the free flow of maize, particularly white maize, sends a clear signal of confidence to agribusinesses and exporters. This move encourages investment, supports expanded production, and benefits all Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States.

Minister Steenhuisen said the decision strengthens regional integration and ensures that surplus-producing nations can meet the needs of neighbouring countries more effectively.

The South African Department of Agriculture reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional partners to promote fair, open, and efficient trade in agricultural products. The department said such collaboration is essential for sustainable growth, poverty alleviation, and enhanced food security in Southern Africa.

The lifting of the maize import ban is expected to stabilise markets, support farmers and exporters, and enhance regional cooperation, ensuring a more resilient and integrated agricultural sector across Southern Africa.
