The National Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO) continues to support business organisations that safeguard the interests of South African producers. In line with this mission, Dr. Frikkie Maré, CEO of the National RPO, and Angus Williamson, Chairperson of RPO KwaZulu-Natal and Second Vice Chairperson of the national RPO, attended the AgriSA Atlas Congress 2025.
The congress provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss pressing challenges and opportunities in the agricultural sector. Dr. Maré delivered two key presentations that highlighted critical issues affecting livestock producers.
The first presentation focused on the impact of climate change on livestock production. Dr. Maré outlined how shifting weather patterns, extreme temperatures, and variable rainfall are affecting animal health, feed availability, and overall farm productivity. He emphasized the need for adaptive strategies, including improved grazing management, water conservation, and climate-resilient breeding practices.
The second presentation addressed biosecurity at the farm level, clarifying where responsibility lies for protecting livestock against disease outbreaks. Dr. Maré stressed that effective biosecurity requires a proactive approach by farmers, including strict hygiene practices, regular monitoring, and prompt reporting of unusual animal health events. He highlighted that collective vigilance is essential to safeguard the broader industry and ensure food security.
Angus Williamson underscored the importance of collaboration between national and provincial RPO structures, noting that engagement at platforms like the AgriSA Atlas Congress strengthens advocacy efforts and provides producers with the tools to navigate emerging challenges.
The participation of the National RPO at the congress reaffirms its commitment to empowering livestock producers through knowledge-sharing, strategic guidance, and industry representation. These initiatives aim to enhance farm resilience, promote sustainable production, and protect the livelihoods of South Africa’s agricultural communities.
