The Agricultural Research Council’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) and the Gauteng Association of Animal Health Technicians (GAAHT) recently hosted a Mini Congress that brought together animal health professionals from across Gauteng. The event focused on improving the understanding and management of major animal diseases affecting the province and the wider agricultural industry.

The congress provided a platform for animal health technicians to exchange knowledge on disease outbreaks, diagnostic methods, and surveillance strategies. Presentations covered pressing topics such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Avian Influenza, and Lumpy Skin Disease, which continue to pose threats to livestock and the economy.

Dr. Van Kleef and Dr. Raboloa officially opened the event, commending the ongoing collaboration between ARC-OVR and GAAHT in strengthening South Africa’s animal health systems. Both emphasized the importance of continuous training and communication among veterinary professionals to respond effectively to emerging disease challenges.

ARC-OVR researchers delivered several technical presentations highlighting recent advances in laboratory diagnostics and field surveillance. They shared updates on how early detection and improved diagnostic accuracy can help limit disease spread, reduce economic losses, and ensure food security.

Delegates discussed the role of animal health technicians as the frontline in detecting and reporting unusual disease cases. They also explored how closer cooperation between technicians, veterinarians, and research institutions can enhance disease response times.

The congress underscored the importance of regular engagement between animal health professionals to keep pace with evolving disease threats. It also reinforced ARC-OVR’s role as a national leader in veterinary research and innovation.

The organizers expressed gratitude to all participants, including industry partners and government representatives, for their contribution to a productive and impactful event. The Mini Congress concluded with a strong call for continued collaboration to protect South Africa’s livestock and sustain the livelihoods of farming communities.
