On 10 October, Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe officially handed over a tractor and its implements to 69-year-old farmer Bangile Jama. Originally from Zikhonkwane Village in Cala, Jama now operates at Beestekraal Farm, located approximately 14 kilometres outside town.

MEC Kontsiwe described the handover as part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to support emerging farmers and strengthen agricultural productivity in rural communities. The tractor, equipped with essential implements, will enable Jama to expand his farming operations and improve efficiency on his farm.

Mr Jama demonstrated remarkable commitment to his farming goals. He used his pension funds to place a deposit on a farm and secured a loan to complete the purchase. His dedication to agriculture at an advanced age reflects the importance of empowering elderly farmers with the right tools and resources to sustain their livelihoods.

The tractor handover is expected to increase productivity, reduce manual labour, and enhance crop management at Beestekraal Farm. It also aligns with broader initiatives to support emerging and smallholder farmers in the Eastern Cape, promoting food security and rural economic development.

MEC Kontsiwe encouraged other farmers to remain committed to their agricultural ventures, emphasizing that government support, combined with personal determination, can transform small-scale farming into sustainable enterprises.

The event highlights the Department’s focus on practical interventions that equip farmers with machinery and skills necessary to thrive in the sector while contributing to local economic growth.
