The Agricultural Research Council (ARC), through the KwaZulu-Natal Kaonafatso ya Digkomo (KYD) programme, recently hosted a series of farmer’s day events across the King Cetshwayo District. The initiative aimed to equip rural livestock farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to build sustainable, market-oriented, and veterinary-aware enterprises.
The programme featured expert speakers in animal production who presented the latest research findings and practical advice tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers. Key areas included animal health, improved production practices, and strategies to expand market opportunities. The emphasis was on bridging the gap between research and real-world farming practices.
Each session combined theory with field demonstrations. Farmers were trained on animal identification and record-keeping systems, which are critical for herd management and traceability. Practical exercises in disease management and biosecurity highlighted steps farmers can take to protect their livestock from outbreaks and reduce losses. The demonstrations also included market access strategies, helping farmers understand buyer requirements and how to position their enterprises competitively.
Participants noted the value of being exposed to hands-on learning rather than only presentations. The approach ensured that farmers left with skills they could apply immediately in their daily operations.
The ARC KYD programme continues to play a vital role in farmer development in KwaZulu-Natal. By combining research, training, and practical engagement, it strengthens local farming communities and improves the sustainability of livestock enterprises in the district.
