MEC Madoda Sambatha officially launched Lolo Moeketsi’s Beekeeping Project in Zeerust, highlighting the Department of Agriculture’s commitment to supporting emerging farmers. The initiative aims to create sustainable agricultural opportunities, particularly for youth and women, while promoting environmentally friendly farming practices.
The beekeeping project is designed to provide participants with practical skills in hive management, honey production, and value addition. By introducing modern techniques and training in bee health and pollination, the project ensures that emerging farmers can generate income while contributing to local food security.
MEC Sambatha emphasized the importance of such initiatives for rural development and job creation. He noted that beekeeping offers a dual benefit: it supports livelihoods and strengthens ecosystems through improved crop pollination. The project also aligns with national objectives to empower historically disadvantaged farmers and enhance participation in the agricultural sector.
The launch attracted community members, local entrepreneurs, and aspiring farmers. Training and mentorship programs linked to the project are expected to equip participants with the knowledge to scale production, process honey into market-ready products, and access local and regional markets.
By supporting projects like Lolo Moeketsi’s Beekeeping Initiative, the Department of Agriculture demonstrates a long-term commitment to sustainable farming, youth engagement, and women’s economic empowerment. The initiative sets a model for emerging farmers across South Africa, showing how targeted support and skills development can transform small-scale agricultural ventures into profitable enterprises.
