20 Undocumented Foreign Nationals Arrested During Farm Operation in Hoedspruit, Limpopo

Twenty undocumented foreign nationals working on farms in and around Hoedspruit, Limpopo, have been arrested during a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation led by the Maruleng Local Municipality.

According to information released following the operation, the foreign nationals were found in possession of passports but were unable to produce valid work permits authorising them to work in South Africa.

The individuals were taken to local police stations, where they will undergo further questioning and investigation as authorities verify their immigration status.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies and government departments to enforce South Africa’s immigration and labour legislation, particularly within the agricultural sector.

The Hoedspruit arrests are the latest in a series of compliance operations targeting farms across the country.

Last week, the Department of Employment and Labour, working together with the Department of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service (SAPS), detained a number of undocumented workers during an inspection at Tomahawk Farm in Malelane, Mpumalanga. Authorities said the workers were unable to provide valid work permits and were subjected to verification through government systems.

In another recent operation in Trichardsdal, Limpopo, a 48-year-old farm owner and 15 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested following an immigration compliance inspection conducted by SAPS within the Maake policing precinct.

Meanwhile, a farm owner in the North West was recently fined R250,000 after a multi-agency compliance operation in the Vorstershoop area allegedly uncovered the employment of undocumented foreign nationals. During that operation, officials from the Department of Home Affairs determined that 23 foreign nationals, aged between 21 and 49, were allegedly in South Africa illegally after their permits or visas had expired or were found to be invalid.

The latest arrests in Hoedspruit suggest that immigration and labour compliance inspections remain a priority for authorities, with farms continuing to be a key focus of enforcement operations across several provinces.

Authorities have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the individuals arrested in Hoedspruit, and investigations into the matter are continuing.
