The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) has confirmed the release of 20 000 doses of locally produced Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine, marking a significant step in national efforts to protect livestock and strengthen animal health. This release follows the initial distribution of 12 900 doses on 6 February 2026 and aims to scale up local production to meet increasing demand. Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, welcomed the development, emphasizing the importance of restoring and expanding vaccine production capacity. He highlighted that over time, the expansion will reduce dependence on imported vaccines and ensure a sustainable supply aligned with the national disease management strategy. Achieving 80% vaccination coverage by the end of the year remains a key target for the government, and the ARC’s efforts are central to reaching this goal.

The ARC has set a clear plan to produce approximately 20 000 doses of the SAT 1, 2, or 3 vaccines weekly, adapting production to match prevailing circulating strains. While the current focus is on SAT 2 monovalent vaccines, flexibility in production will ensure that the vaccine supply remains relevant and effective. ARC President and CEO, Dr. Litha Magingxa, emphasized that expanding local manufacturing capacity provides farmers and veterinary services with timely access to essential vaccines, directly supporting animal health and food security. The coordinated effort combines local production with strategic international partnerships, increasing the protection of livestock nationwide. This proactive approach ensures that farmers can maintain herd health and minimize economic losses caused by FMD outbreaks.

The surge in local production has already had a measurable impact. Since the initial February release and the importation of one million Biogénesis Bagó doses from Argentina and 1.5 million from Dollvet in Turkey, more than 1.7 million animals have been vaccinated as of 26 March 2026. April will see an additional 3.5 million vaccine doses entering the program, with 1.5 million from Biogénesis Bagó and two million from Dollvet, further boosting coverage. This combination of domestic production and international supply ensures that vaccination campaigns can reach more regions effectively and on schedule. Farmers and veterinary authorities are now better equipped to respond to disease threats while maintaining the continuity of livestock production.

The ARC’s commitment to expanding production capacity demonstrates a strategic approach to long-term animal health management. By scaling up local manufacturing and maintaining adaptability to circulating FMD strains, South Africa can reduce reliance on imported vaccines and respond faster to outbreaks. This effort aligns with broader goals of securing food supply, supporting livestock-dependent communities, and strengthening national veterinary infrastructure. The increased availability of vaccines provides a robust foundation for sustained vaccination campaigns, allowing authorities to work toward the year-end target of 80% coverage.

With the release of 20 000 locally produced FMD vaccine doses, South Africa takes a decisive step in controlling a disease that poses significant economic and agricultural risks. The combined effect of local production and international cooperation ensures that more animals are protected and that vaccination campaigns are sustainable. Continued investment in ARC production facilities and strategic partnerships will help maintain a reliable vaccine supply, safeguard animal health, and enhance food security across the country. These efforts demonstrate a proactive, coordinated approach to managing FMD and protecting the livelihoods of South African farmers.
