The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) partnered with Grain SA, PGP, Bayer, and the Salubindza/Luphisi Study Group to host a Farmers Information Day on Grain Production at Luphisi Community Hall. The event attracted a diverse group of farmers, ranging from smallholder to commercial producers, all seeking practical guidance on improving their farming practices. Attendees gained detailed information on maize planting techniques, appropriate planting times for different varieties, and selecting maize types suited to their soil and environmental conditions. The program also included best practices for planting and harvesting groundnuts, as well as strategies for soil conservation. By focusing on both technical knowledge and sustainable methods, the event provided farmers with tools to improve productivity and protect the long-term health of their land.

External stakeholders played a significant role in enriching the program. Santam presented on Weather Index Insurance, offering farmers solutions to mitigate climate-related risks by securing coverage for their crops and livestock. Representatives from Mpumalanga Provincial People and Parks addressed the management of human-wildlife conflict, an issue that affects crop yields and livestock safety in rural communities. These presentations highlighted the importance of risk management and environmental awareness in modern farming. Attendees were able to ask questions, share their own experiences, and learn from experts, creating an interactive platform that went beyond traditional training. The inclusion of insurance and conservation topics emphasized a holistic approach to agricultural resilience.

The Farmers Information Day also facilitated networking and collaboration among participants. Farmers exchanged knowledge on practical issues, such as soil preparation, pest management, and crop rotation, while discussing challenges unique to their regions. The event encouraged the formation of partnerships between smallholder and commercial farmers, as well as stronger connections with agricultural stakeholders. Sharing best practices helped participants identify new approaches to increase efficiency, reduce losses, and maximize yield. The day reinforced the value of continuous learning and collaboration in building sustainable agricultural communities across Mpumalanga.

By combining technical expertise, risk management strategies, and opportunities for knowledge exchange, the event delivered actionable insights to attendees. Farmers left with practical guidance on maize and groundnut production, soil conservation, and methods to mitigate environmental and climate-related challenges. The program demonstrated how coordinated efforts between government, private sector partners, and local study groups can strengthen the agricultural sector. Participants gained not only skills but also confidence in implementing improved practices on their farms. Overall, the Farmers Information Day highlighted the importance of education, collaboration, and innovation in supporting productive and resilient farming in the province.

The success of the Luphisi Community Hall event underscores the benefits of bringing stakeholders and farmers together to address both technical and environmental aspects of grain production. By providing a platform for learning, discussion, and collaboration, Mpumalanga DARDLEA and its partners are fostering a stronger, more knowledgeable farming community. The strategies shared during the day will help farmers increase productivity, reduce risk, and ensure long-term sustainability of their operations. Continued engagement through similar initiatives will strengthen connections between farmers and agricultural stakeholders while promoting best practices across the region. The event serves as a model for how education and partnership can drive growth and resilience in South African agriculture.
