MEC Madoda Sambatha recently provided a critical update on the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak at the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture, addressing the media and stakeholders on the province’s ongoing containment measures. FMD has affected 16 out of 18 municipalities in the North West Province, with 158 confirmed cases reported to date, highlighting the urgency of coordinated action. The disease poses a serious threat to livestock health, farmer livelihoods, and the broader agricultural economy, making rapid intervention essential. MEC Sambatha outlined the province’s vaccination plan, which focuses on controlling the outbreak in the most affected districts, particularly Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Bojanala, and ensuring that farmers are fully informed and supported throughout the response. The update emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, farmers, and veterinary services to curb the disease’s spread.

A key component of the response is the practical rollout of vaccinations, demonstrated at the Machavie Experimental Farm near Potchefstroom. The province recently received 100,000 doses of the Biogenesis Bago FMD vaccine, and demonstrations showcased correct administration techniques to ensure maximum efficacy. These efforts aim to build confidence among farmers and veterinarians in handling the vaccine and in implementing biosecurity measures on their farms. The vaccination strategy targets farms and villages within a 5km radius of infected areas, reflecting a focused approach to contain the virus while preventing further spread. Priority is given to cattle, with the goal of reaching 90% vaccination coverage in alignment with national targets, a critical threshold for establishing herd immunity and controlling outbreaks.

Farmers play a central role in the containment strategy through vigilant reporting and responsible livestock management. MEC Sambatha urged farmers to report any suspicious symptoms immediately and to avoid moving livestock where infection is suspected. Prompt reporting allows veterinary teams to trace contacts, administer vaccines, and implement quarantine measures where needed. Farmers are also encouraged to strengthen farm-level biosecurity, including controlling access, disinfecting equipment, and monitoring animal health regularly. By acting responsibly, farmers contribute to the province’s broader efforts to protect the livestock sector and minimize economic losses from the outbreak.

The North West Province’s response demonstrates a coordinated approach that combines vaccination, education, and biosecurity measures. By prioritizing high-risk areas and ensuring widespread vaccine coverage, authorities aim to halt the progression of FMD while safeguarding the livelihoods of local communities. Public awareness campaigns and hands-on demonstrations reinforce the importance of vigilance and compliance with veterinary guidance. The collaborative effort between government officials, veterinary services, and farmers highlights the shared responsibility in managing livestock diseases effectively. This approach not only addresses the immediate outbreak but also strengthens the province’s preparedness for future challenges in animal health.

The FMD outbreak in the North West Province demands swift and coordinated action to protect livestock and support farmers. MEC Madoda Sambatha’s update and the vaccination demonstrations underscore the province’s commitment to achieving high coverage and implementing effective containment measures. Farmers are urged to engage actively, report symptoms promptly, and maintain strong biosecurity practices to prevent further spread. Through cooperation, vigilance, and responsible action, the province can control the outbreak, safeguard the livestock sector, and ensure the continued stability of agriculture in the region.
