The Mahlabathini farming community, located outside Highflats within the Johannes Phumani Local Municipality, experienced a moment of emotional relief and renewed hope with the arrival of KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, at Mziki Community Hall. Her visit formed part of Thamsanqa Ntuli’s Operation Sukuma Sakhe, a programme designed to provide integrated government support at community level. Residents, particularly young subsistence farmers, could not hide their appreciation as they faced persistent challenges such as food insecurity, high unemployment, and rising incidents of livestock theft. The emotional reception highlighted the community’s need for practical support and encouragement in agricultural initiatives. This visit provided both tangible resources and the assurance that government recognizes and supports their struggles.

During her visit, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa handed over farming implements and tools to community members to enhance food production and strengthen farming operations. These resources are expected to improve productivity, allowing small-scale farmers to cultivate crops more efficiently and sustainably. One programme beneficiary, Maphili Mhlongo, expressed gratitude for the continued support from the Department, pledging to use the tools to increase her output while promoting agriculture among her peers. She emphasized the importance of leading by example, motivating other young farmers to embrace agricultural activities as both a livelihood and a cultural movement. Her commitment reflects the broader objective of empowering youth in agriculture and fostering community participation in farming initiatives.

The MEC, accompanied by senior government officials, engaged directly with the youth, urging them to actively participate in agricultural activities as the future drivers of the sector. She highlighted the importance of developing practical skills, adopting modern farming techniques, and using available resources to improve both household food security and economic opportunities. By encouraging young farmers to engage with agriculture, the Department aims to build a sustainable workforce capable of responding to local and national food demands. This hands-on approach strengthens the connection between government programmes and the community, ensuring that interventions have a lasting impact. The session reinforced the message that agriculture is not only a means of survival but also a pathway for empowerment and economic growth.

As part of the visit, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa conducted an oversight inspection at Nhlambamasoka Dip Tank following the recent rollout of the Foot and Mouth Disease vaccination campaign. This intervention forms a critical part of the Department’s strategy to control and prevent the spread of FMD in the province. Farmers were reminded of the importance of actively participating in livestock health management, including ensuring timely vaccinations, regular dipping for parasite control, and prompt reporting of unusual symptoms or sudden livestock deaths. MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasized that these measures are essential to protecting livestock populations, safeguarding livelihoods, and maintaining food security in rural communities. Oversight visits such as these allow the Department to monitor the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns and address any gaps in implementation.

MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa reinforced that livestock farmers must comply with biosecurity measures and cooperate fully with veterinary officials to curb FMD effectively. The Department’s Veterinary Services team remains committed to monitoring livestock health and ensuring no new cases are reported. Farmers’ active participation is crucial to safeguarding the province’s livestock industry and preventing outbreaks that could disrupt both local and national markets. This visit combined immediate support, resource provision, and technical oversight, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to community empowerment and agricultural resilience. Through these efforts, the Mahlabathini farming community receives practical assistance, guidance, and renewed confidence to continue building sustainable agricultural livelihoods.

The visit by MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa underscored the government’s commitment to supporting rural farmers through resources, training, and oversight. By combining equipment provision with engagement, education, and veterinary supervision, the Department ensures that interventions have long-term benefits. The emotional response from the community reflects the tangible impact of these initiatives and the renewed hope they inspire. Young farmers, equipped with tools and knowledge, are positioned to contribute meaningfully to local food production and economic growth. Continued collaboration between the Department, veterinary services, and the community will be key to sustaining agricultural development and protecting livestock health across KwaZulu-Natal.
