The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken a significant step in supporting local farmers by officially handing over infrastructure projects worth R60 million to the Jozini community. The handover, led by MEC Mrs. Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, included the provision of fencing materials and poles valued at nearly R7 million, benefiting six agricultural cooperatives across 56 kilometers. In addition, the Makhathini Irrigation Scheme received a subsurface drainage, pump, and canal maintenance project worth R53 million. These initiatives aim to improve farming conditions, secure crop production, and enhance the overall livelihoods of local farmers. The projects demonstrate the department’s strategic investment in agricultural infrastructure to ensure food security and sustainable development in the region.

The MEC emphasized that the projects respond directly to the challenges farmers faced along the banks of the Pongolapoort (Jozini) Dam, where floods and water releases often destroyed vegetable crops. By clearing and securing a new farming area, the department has provided a safe working environment for 403 cooperative members. The newly fenced area reduces risks from flooding and wildlife, allowing farmers to focus on consistent and productive cultivation. Farmers actively participated in preparing the land, signaling a strong collaboration between the department and local communities. The intervention reflects a proactive approach to addressing long-standing agricultural challenges and improving operational efficiency in local cooperatives.

Farmers welcomed the provision of poles and fencing materials, highlighting the tangible impact on their daily work. Solekile Ndlovu expressed relief that threats from wildlife would no longer interfere with crop safety. Bheki Tembe shared gratitude for the department’s intervention, noting that their concerns about unfenced gardens had been directly addressed through this project. The handover ceremony served not only as a formal presentation of resources but also as a platform for farmers to engage with the department and communicate ongoing needs. MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa affirmed that the projects reflect the department’s commitment to fulfilling promises and supporting sustainable agriculture.

The allocation of R53 million to the Makhathini Irrigation Scheme represents a critical investment in water infrastructure for vegetable and crop production. With 4,500 hectares of land under the scheme, the uMkhanyakude District plays a central role as a breadbasket for the province. MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasized the need to ensure optimal land use and productivity, highlighting the importance of irrigation maintenance, drainage, and water supply reliability. The initiative encourages cooperative farmers to restructure vegetable and crop arrangements, promoting coordinated farming practices across the scheme. By focusing on both infrastructure and operational improvements, the department aims to maximize the economic potential of the region’s agricultural sector.

The successful handover of these projects marks a pivotal moment for farming in Jozini, improving safety, productivity, and resource management. The combination of fencing, irrigation, and drainage infrastructure provides a foundation for sustainable growth and food security in northern KwaZulu-Natal. By addressing immediate challenges and planning for long-term efficiency, the department strengthens the capacity of local cooperatives to thrive in a competitive agricultural landscape. These projects demonstrate a clear commitment to supporting farmers, optimizing land use, and ensuring that agricultural initiatives translate into tangible benefits for communities. The R60 million investment sets a precedent for continued collaboration between government and local stakeholders to advance rural development and sustainable farming practices.
